Enterprise storage provides businesses with a centralized resource for storing, sharing, and retrieving data. However, this massive $30B industry is facing disruption due to the adoption of container-based software development, which reliably delivers up to 10x higher application density over traditional architectures. A company like Google, for example, creates billions of containers each week. Conventional enterprise storage systems are not designed for these container-driven environments, creating a sizable pain point for enterprise dev-ops and infrastructure teams.

Alumni Ventures portfolio company StorageOS addresses this issue with software-defined storage, capable of running containerized applications in the cloud, on-premises, or in hybrid/multi-cloud environments. The company’s cloud-native SaaS platform integrates with Kubernetes (an open-source container-orchestration system) and automates storage provisioning, availability, and scaling with material cost, efficiency, and security benefits to its users.

A Large and Growing Market

Container-native networking and storage are the fastest growing markets within the Kubernetes ecosystem. According to 451 Research, 95% of new apps are developed in containers. StorageOS is specifically addressing the $30 billion enterprise storage market, of which management calculates it has a $10 billion serviceable addressable market.

Serving Storage Benefits to Multiple Industries

Headquartered in London, StorageOS was founded in 2015 to provide persistent container storage to developers and platform managers. Some of the benefits of StorageOS’ product include:

  • Ease of use: Both developers and enterprises can better understand and address storage issues in real time.
  • Cost savings: Enterprises can reduce storage cost by up to 50% due to more efficient allocation of storage across the tech stack.
  • Performance: Users can realize up to 10x faster speed of application and processing from improved access to available storage.
  • Security and stability: The product also offers higher levels of redundancy across the network.

StorageOS’s product has been deployed by dozens of enterprises across different industries, including Accenture, Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems, information technology company CACI, DHL, and more.

Andy Jeffries, CTO of web hosting company Civo, spoke on his experience working with StorageOS. “There are a few critical areas in our stack where we cannot afford failure. Storage is one such area. We evaluated open-source options for cloud-native storage, but they were not as stable and scalable for our high-performance use case. We chose StorageOS because it is lightweight, reliable, scalable, and performant.”

How We Are Involved

Chestnut Street Ventures (for Penn alumni and friends of the community) and sibling funds invested in the company’s $10 million Series B. Downing Ventures, a London-based VC with whom Alumni Ventures has made multiple co-investments, led the round. Bain Capital Ventures, Uncorrelated Ventures, and MMC Ventures also participated in the round. This funding will be used to expand product development and drive global sales.
